Mljet

Mljet is one of the most green and least developed islands in southern Croatia, located in the Adriatic Sea northwest of Dubrovnik. Often called the “green island” of Dalmatia, it is famous for its dense Mediterranean forests, clear waters, and tranquil atmosphere, making it one of the most naturally preserved islands in the region.

A large part of the island is protected as Mljet National Park, which covers the western section of the island and includes two saltwater lakes, Veliko Jezero and Malo Jezero. In the middle of Veliko Jezero lies a small islet with a 12th-century Benedictine monastery, one of the island’s most iconic sights.

Mljet has a small population and limited urban development, with villages such as Pomena, Polače, and Babino Polje offering accommodation and services. The island is popular among nature lovers, hikers, cyclists, and sailors seeking a quiet escape, with activities centered around kayaking, swimming, and exploring the national park.

Unlike more developed Croatian islands, Mljet remains largely untouched, offering a peaceful contrast to busier tourist destinations and a strong sense of natural and historical authenticity.
