Omiš

Omiš is a picturesque coastal town in central Dalmatia, Croatia, situated where the Cetina River meets the Adriatic Sea. Set between steep limestone cliffs and the sea, it has one of the most dramatic natural settings on the Croatian coast, with a compact old town nestled between mountains, river canyon, and coastline.

Historically, Omiš was known as a stronghold of pirates during the Middle Ages, who used the Cetina River canyon and nearby sea routes to control and raid passing ships. This legacy is still visible today through landmarks such as the Mirabella Fortress and Fortica Fortress, which offer panoramic views over the town, river delta, and nearby islands.

The old town features narrow streets, stone houses, and a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere, while the coastline offers some of the rare sandy beaches in Dalmatia, especially near the river mouth. The Cetina River also adds a strong outdoor dimension to the area, with activities such as rafting, zip-lining, canyoning, and boat excursions inland.

Omiš is also strategically located between Split and Makarska, making it a popular base for exploring central Dalmatia. It combines history, adventure tourism, river landscapes, and beach relaxation in a compact and highly scenic setting.
